The rule of three at home: a golden rule for a balanced interior. Get inspired!
The rule of three probably reminds you of your time at school... Don't worry! In this article, we won't be talking about mathematics, but interior styling. The rule of three is the golden rule for your interior and you find it everywhere. Need some inspiration? This is your guide!
Is it a coincidence that this article has 3 sections? Maybe... ;-)
1. Literally 1-2-3
The easiest and most obvious way of incorporating the rule of three in your interior, is by going for 3 elements. There are 2 ways to do so. Either you combine 3 identical or similar items, such as 3 photo frames, 3 candles, 3 plants... Too boring? Groups of 3 are the other option. The classic example: a vase, a candle and a coffee table book.

2. Let's talk colours, textures and shapes
A little less notable, but the more valuable for your home: 3 colours, shapes and textures.
3 colours
We often choose 1 accent colour. Think of the typical accent wall in a bright colour. And there's nothing wrong with that! Combine this bold colour with two more neutral colours (1+2 = 3) and the result will be in perfect harmony. Another option: 3 neutral shades. Very on-trend in the Scandinavian and Japandi style. White, beige and black are always a great combo, and so are white, beige and terracotta.
3 textures
Even less obvious, is the rule of three in textures. This can be easily done by choosing 3 different fabrics for the pillows in your couch, but you can take it to another level if you want. A complete interior consisting of only 3 materials, such as wood, wool and ceramics can be very powerful.

3 shapes
Besides the colours and textures, you can implement the rule of three in shapes too. Difficult to imagine? These vases are proof.
Another option: the same shape, but different sizes.

3. Subtly present
Last but not least (however the least noticeable) is the rule of three on the level of furniture and levels (pun intended).
Let's talk about furniture first. Imagine the perfect reading corner. What does it look like? We guess it's composed of a comfy seat, a side table and a lamp, right? And that makes 3... (Left photo: cabanastateofmind.com (Pinterest))
On the other hand, a home bar often counts 3 bar stools and most dining tables have 3 chairs on each side.
Regarding the levels, you don't even have to think about the rule of 3. You automatically create levels. From the carpet over the dining table to the pendant light, or starting with the flower pot on the floor to the windowsill and the shelf.
