Modern sitting position? Ergonomic chair! Everything you need to know.

There we go again: modern technology is - once again - the cause. Smartphones, tablets, laptops (and the combination of all these devices) have changed our sitting position, a lot. Not just at the office, but everywhere you sit down, your position matters. The solution (apart from a correct sitting position)? An ergonomic chair!

Did you know... we spend about 8 hours a day sitting?

The problem: our sitting position

Believe it or not, even the different sitting positions have a name. These names are given by Steelcase, after a large investigation. And these sitting positions can be problematic... A shortlist:

  • the draw: lean back and read on your tablet
  • the multi-device: using your laptop and phone at the same time
  • the text: sending texts at your desk
  • the cocoon: lean-back position with your knees raised
  • the swipe: swiping on your phone our tablet while leaning over your desk
  • the smart lean: hanging and twisted position, to use your smartphone in a relaxed way
  • the trance: hanging towards your desk/table and computer
  • the ‘take-it-in’: lean back to 'take something in'
  • the strunch: computer to the back, while you lean forward and stretch

The solution: an ergonomic chair

We start our day at the breakfast table, followed by a car ride and a day at the office, sitting down. When we come home, we take place at the dining table again to end up lying down on the sofa... It's clear: good ergonomics are very important. Discover our tips, according to every chair type:

Kitchen and dining room chairs

You use the chairs in your house constantly. Think about making homework, long dining nights or a relaxed morning reading the newspaper. In this case, comfort and a backrest, supporting your natural position, are the most important. A bench can be really trendy, but not that ergonomic...

Office chair

The biggest part of the week is spent on your office chair, which makes it clear a good ergonomic chair is essential. Make sure your office chair is adjustable, in terms of both the seat (height and depth) and the arm- & backrest.

Seats and sofas

"The sofa is for hanging, right?" Yes and no... Lying down on the sofa is great, and you're allowed to do so, but you better don't do it too much or all the time. There are two possibilities: either you choose an ergonomic relax seat, or you change your position regularly.

And now: sit back and relax!
