DIY: make your own beautiful terrazzo coasters

Dirty tablecloths, stubborn stains or sticky circles? No way! You can easily solve the problem with some pretty coasters. And why not make them yourself? In this article, you discover how to make your own unique terrazzo coasters, following the newest trends!

This is what you need for 6 coasters

They might look spectacular, but you don’t need that much material or time to make your own terrazzo coasters. You probably already have everything you need, except for the clay.

  • White fimo clay
  • Coloured fimo clay (pick your favourite colours)
  • Cutter
  • Rolling pin
  • Grater
  • Knife
  • Baking paper

Tip: for 1 coaster, you will need approximately 120-150 grams of clay.

This is how you make them

If you follow these steps, you will have pretty, handmade terrazzo coasters in less than an hour. Let’s go!

The base

  1. Roll out the white clay until it’s 3-5 mm thick.
  2. Grate or cut smaller pieces out of the coloured clay. Put these pieces on the base. You can go as wild as you want.
  3. Roll out the clay another time until the coloured pieces have the same thickness as the base.

Tip: Do you want to be sure the coasters have the same height or thickness on every side? Use 2 little bars (with the right height) and roll over them. This way, the result will be equal.

The finishing

  1. Cut out the form you like out of the clay. Classic, round coasters are practical, because most glasses have a round base. If you choose another shape, make sure the coasters are big enough.
  2. Place the coasters on a plate covered with baking paper and bake for about 30 minutes in a preheated 100-110 degrees oven. Watch out: keep an eye on the oven, the coasters might burn.
  3. Let them cool down and you’re ready to serve!
